Halfway Houses and Dual Diagnosis
Many people in recovery have other mental health problems too. Depression is common. It may have started years ago or it may present after you have been sober awhile. Treatment facilities try to address these issues but sometimes it is difficult. You do not want to talk about your eating disorder in your aftercare group for chemical dependency. You need more privacy. Sometimes it is impossible to treat two or three diagnoses at the same time although they are all correlated.
There are some dual diagnosis treatment facilities and halfway houses. These are generally for people with a more serious and persistent mental health problem. Treatment centers all over try to integrate treatment. Fifty percent of all the mentally ill people in the United States have a chemical dependency problem too. Substance abuse can cover up mental health symptoms.
Mental illness symptoms may appear after you become sober. You were medicating your symptoms with drugs or alcohol. The most common illnesses coexisting with chemical dependency is depressive and anxiety disorders. Their health care providers sometimes call these people “double trouble”.

Now that you are facing the world without drugs or alcohol your symptoms will begin to occur and you do need treatment and should feel no shame. It used to be unacceptable in AA to need to take a medication to numb your feelings; you are supposed to be able to conquer anything now that you sober. Thank god they do not think that way any more. If you have been diagnosed with depression the chemicals in your brain are haywire it is not your fault. You are sick and you do not have to feel so bad.
You may have been diagnosed with depression before you went to treatment. Your medication does not work very well if you are drinking or using drugs with it. You have a medical illness, two medical illnesses actually. This population could benefit from sober living and support. If a depressed person returns to their apartment where they live alone and she is to shy to go to meetings. What do you think will happen? Yes, there is a pretty good chance she will start using again.
Treatment programs do their best to address all your problems. In most treatment programs a psychologist sees you. The physician may put you on a medication while you are in treatment. You are lucky if they do. Staying sober is hard enough.
If you are chemically dependent and depressed, it is a good idea if you are seeing a psychiatrist and a therapist. You may not need a dual diagnosis halfway house. Sober living houses can offer you support and you can see your mental health providers while you are in a sober living community. You are in a good place and getting treatment for both illnesses.
